Tintin

Les Aventures de Tintin (The Adventures of Tintin) is a series of comic books produced by Georges Rémi (1907 – 1983), a Belgian artist whose pen name was Hergé. More than 350 million copies of the books have been sold to date and the series has been translated into over 80 languages, making it one of the 20th century’s most popular European comics.

The series first appeared on 10 January 1929 in La Petite Vingtième, a supplement for children to Le XXe Siècle, a Belgian newspaper. The series is set in the 20th century and its hero is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter who is accompanied by his fox terrier dog Snowy. As time went on, there were additions to the cast such as Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus, and Thomson and Thompson. In several of the comics, Hergè and his assistants sometimes appear as background characters. The stories always incorporate slapstick humour and later strips are characterised by satire and often, political and cultural commentary.
